چکیده

It is an essential component/cofactor for more than 300 enzymes involved in the synthesis and metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids and other micro-nutrients. It stabilises cellular components and membranes and so is important for cell and organ structure and integrity. It is essential for cell division and is needed for normal growth and development during pregnancy, childhood and adolescence. It is involved in DNA synthesis and the process of genetic expression. It is important for immune function (both cellular and humoral immunity). It is involved in wound healing and tissue repair. It is needed for the senses of taste and smell.

Denture cream: an unusual source of excess zinc, leading to hypocupremia and neurologic disease.

BACKGROUND Chronic, excess zinc intake can result in copper deficiency and profound neurologic disease. However, when hyperzincemia is identified, the source often remains elusive. We identified four patients, one previously reported, with various neurologic abnormalities in the setting of hypocupremia and hyperzincemia. Each of these patients wore dentures and used very large amounts of dentur...

Copper excess, zinc deficiency, and cognition loss in Alzheimer's disease.

In this special issue about biofactors causing cognitive impairment, we present evidence for and discuss two such biofactors. One is excess copper, causing neuronal toxicity. The other is zinc deficiency, causing neuronal damage. We present evidence that Alzheimer's disease (AD) has become an epidemic in developed, but not undeveloped, countries and that the epidemic is a new disease phenomenon...

Zinc-induced copper deficiency: a report of three cases initially recognized on bone marrow examination.

Copper deficiency is a rare cause of sideroblastic anemia and neutropenia that often is not suspected clinically. The morphologic findings in bone marrow, while not pathognomonic, are sufficiently characteristic to suggest the diagnosis, leading to further testing to establish the correct diagnosis. Excess zinc ingestion is among the causes of copper deficiency. We present 3 cases of zinc-induc...

The Potential Role and Possible Immunological Mechanisms of Zinc Adjunctive Therapy for Severe Pneumonia in Children

Zinc deficiency is widespread and tends to mirror the distribution of infectious diseases prevalent in the developing world. Despite numerous observational studies suggesting a key role for zinc in human immunity and an involvement in disease pathogenesis, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood, and zinc intervention trials across a range of diseases have yielded mixed results. Ther...
